One thing I frequently hear when I do a performance evaluation, is, ” that’s the way we have always done it”, or “I don’t know why we do it, we just do”. It is troubling when these responses come from the manager!
Sometimes, when it isn’t broken, maybe it is a good idea to break it….. Symbolically, of course. Break the process or procedure down so everyone understands why it is done or even if it is still needed to be done. It is best to start with some well thought out goals, and then determine best practices to get there. You might even find out that the person who you thought was benefiting from all the work was really not.
Also, this is an excellent time to look at better ways to gather information. Many companies gather information on paper, and then manually key the data. Some even go so far as to key data into a spreadsheet, print it off, pass it to another person, who then rekey data into their own spreadsheet. How inefficient is that!
